Scales Cure?

I have what we call around here a Japanese Magnolia. We had two but scales got to them so now we only have one. Scales are small scale like bugs that destroy plants. So I scoured online trying to save my last remaining tree. It's about 4 ft. high right now but covered all over in scales and I really would like to do my best to save it.  I read about the pesticides you could spray on the trees but I also read you might have to spray for months to actually kill all the scales. One lady said she had mixed 50% white vinegar and 50% rubbing alcohol. Supposedly it will kill the scales. So I sprayed last night (during the day the tree is covered in yellow jackets and all kinds of wasp) in a small area to see if it works. Keeping my fingers crossed.

By the way, the "cure" of 50% vinegar and 50% alcohol works wonders for swimmers ear.

*Update* Sep. 27, 2011- This cure does not work. While it does kill the black mold or fungus that is a result of the honeydew emitted from the scales it seems to have done nothing to the scales population at all. I have doused the scales themselves many times over, but the only thing that improved about the tree was the lack of black mold or fungus on the leaves everything else was the same. Pesticides are your best bet probably, other than chopping the tree down.
