A Snake Tale

I already posted my Opossum Adventure, so I thought I would post our Snake Tale, it happened some time ago but still worthy of posting I think.

One day I noticed that our egg count was dropping. I thought maybe it was the heat for a while, then I started to wonder if there wasn't something else going on. All my hens started sleeping on roosts, which was odd, the majority of the hens actually slept on the ground. So Mom and I walked to the chicken coop to get some eggs, and just check on the chickens. The chickens were screaming when we got there. I looked around to see what the fuss was.... and saw a giant chicken snake. At first Mom thought it was a moccasin but upon closer look it was indeed a chicken snake. I ran inside to see if it had eaten my carefully placed golf ball. He had! So whether we killed him or not he would die. Though I sorely wanted my golf ball back, I only had one! Mom proceeded to hack away at our unwelcome guest. That didn't go well. I grabbed my bow and arrows. I nabbed him straight through! That was fun! Mom proceeded to make her own weapon for our friend while I continued to pepper him with arrows, and keep him inside the coop. Mom wired a machete to an old broom handle, creating what she called, "The Weapon". I wasn't convinced. The trouble we were having was that the snake had curled up under a rabbit cage, which was unmovable, and the dirt beneath him was soft. So trying to slice his head off with a shovel simply was not working, and we  couldn't get enough leverage to really get weight on the shovel. Mom hacked away at Mr. Snake with all she had for a good 30 minutes. Then I took over and by a series of hooking flesh, and hacking with the machete we were finally able to kill Mr. Snake. We pulled him out the chicken coop and measured him, Mom still trembling and scared the thing would jump up and bite us. I was able to cut him up enough to get my golf ball back! Yay! Though it underwent a thorough cleaning. I know you're dying to know how big this guy was..... 6 ft! Well, I guess that isn't huge, but for our first snake kill it was. I had Mom take a picture of me holding it up! Fun! Well, here's the picture and that's the end of this really long tale.

Yes, those are pieces of his skin hanging! And no, his head is not on.

  1. Oh. My. This was absolutely hysterical!!! I can almost see y'all attacking that poor snake! (But then as Dad says, "The ONLY good snake is a dead snake" so I suppose I shouldn't pity it too much)

We once had a snake in our coop, but unfortunately the little guy was too fast for us and disappeared before we found sufficient weapons. It did make for a fun writing project for school as I wrote a short tale about it from my chicken's perspective. :)
