We have this problem with our riding lawn mower....things like to make nests inside the engine. It's happened well over 10 times and unsuspecting me cranks the motor, hears it struggle, catch, and then crunch....another animal ripped apart by the engine. I stare devastated as feathers fly out the sides of the lawn mower. Never fun!
It's now fall, and the leaves are, well, falling. Since there is no way I can rake 3 acres of land and even be remotely able to keep up with it, I ride my lawn mower every couple weeks, just to keep the leaves in check. I waltz out the door, all excited, I cleaned the whole house yesterday just so I could have the day free to work outside. I bang on the lawn mower hood, nothing, I flip the hood up and do a thorough check. Something jumps out and disappears....I sigh, and head for the toolbox. I roll the lawn mower out a bit so I have more room to work and between my feet is this little pink thing...I grab it, put it in my pocket and get to work finding the other "pink things". Certainly not a bird, some sort of rodent, rabbit, or rat? After a while I get the engine cover off, and start pulling wads of my chicken's feathers out of the engine, I keep hearing this little chirping noise, obviously there is something in there. Eventually I find the other pink thing and place them both in a little box with a heater. I mow the yard and head inside to do some research. They're rats!! Well, maybe mice, but they'd have to be some pretty big mice! I did my research and found I could give them a water solution until I was able to get some formula. It's recommended that you use Infant Soy Formula, it has the appropriate amounts of protein, etc.
So I call Mom, let her know and ask to pick up some formula.
Last night I thought they died, this morning they were like ice, and so I naturally thought they were dead. Well, they aren't so I moved them to my room with the proper set up. A cardboard box on top of a heating pad, naturally the box has a blanket inside. Now, all I'm waiting for is the formula! Rats really aren't that hard! Every three hours during the day, and then only once in the middle of the night! Super cool. They're soo cute! Of course, it took much persuading and, I must admit a little whining, to get my parents to let me keep them and nurse them.
